New Server, New Connection
Written by Tobias on June 6th 2005

Fat of the LAN Upgraded!

The Fat of the LAN server has been upgraded to a new Dell PowerEdge server. It is now also co-lo'd in a cabinet at Infinity Internet so things should be much faster now.

UPDATE - Well the server died today. I think the mainboard gacked, but fortunately I had another identical server on hand that hadn't gone out yet. Just swapped out the drives and put it back in the rack so Dell can repair this one. Expect an outage in a day or two.

Passed the CISSP exam
Written by Tobias on December 24th 2004

Woo Hoo! I just received my conformation email from (ISC)2 letting me know that I passed my CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) exam.
Hot damn I’m glad that I passed that. I’d hate to have to sit that one again. Toughest exam I’ve ever taken in my life. The exam is referd to as a mile wide and an inch deep which I think sums it up very well, considering is covers the following topics:

  • Access Control Systems & Methodology
  • Applications & Systems Development
  • Business Continuity Planning
  • Cryptography
  • Law, Investigation & Ethics
  • Operations Security
  • Physical Security
  • Security Architecture & Models
  • Security Management Practices
  • Telecommunications, Network & Internet Security
I guess I’ll have to update my business cards again ;)

Snort Cookbook
Written by Tobias on September 17th 2004

Powered by Snort

w00t! How cool. I just received an email from the good folks from O'Reilly. They have an upcoming book on the Snort intrusion detection system and I've been asked to help review the book. How exciting. I've been using Snort for a couple of years and really love the 'pig. I'm glad to be able to give something back to such a great community.

[EDIT 12.2.04] After many delays on my part, hardware failures, CISSP exam cramming, being out of town, and missing most of my deadlines, I’ve turned in my notes for the book. Thoughts; Awesome book! If you want to install Snort or are currently using Snort and would like to know how to get more out of it, this is the book for you. It’s really a must have.

Using LDAP for single authentication
Written by Tobias on June 2nd 2004

New How-To for Using LDAP for single authentication.

Ever think how nice it would be if you didn’t have 9 usernames and passwords to remember for all of the different services on all the different servers you use. Well you can if you have a LDAP directory with you username and password in it, and you configure all the services to use LDAP. This how-to is not the most comprehensive source for doing this, rather a step by step guide that should be enough to get you going in the right direction. This will let users have one account in LDAP and use any service on any server that you choose to allow. i.e. ssh, email, web permissions, samba file shares, ftp, and on and on…

Using LDAP for single authentication

New How-To
Written by Tobias on April 5th 2004

New Article added.

I've just finished a new article in the Technical section on installing Postfix MTA with Amavis, ClamAv, and Spamassassin. Although it is specificly written for Debian Linux users, many of the concepts are the same on other Linux distros. It also covers setting up SMPT AUTH via TLS to authenticate users for mail relay.

See it here:
How To Install Postfix, Amavis, ClamAV, and Spamassassin

MyContacts Now With Sessions
Written by Tobias on March 22nd 2004

Download MyContacts

MyContacts now supports session based authentication/access. I don't really like using Apache for access so I added the option to use session based access in the config.php file. Besides adding some new features like sessions, it also includes utilities for adding/editing/deleting users and some minor bugfixes.

Get it HERE.

Powered by Debian
Written by Tobias on March 11th 2004

Now Powered by Debian!

Well the Debian install went just fine, and everyting seems to be running just great. Expect more how-to's! Since I switched from Sendmail to Postfix, I'll be outlining how I did it HERE.
I also installed Debian on Software RAID as I outlined in the how-to HERE.

If you happen to find any bugs please contact me.

I've added two new articles in the Technical section on protecting your data with software RAID. The first article is a how-to for installing Gentoo Linux on to software RAID. The second article is a how-to on migrating a current Debian Linux install on to a RAID 1 array.

Not Powered By RedHat
Written by Tobias on February 5th 2004

Not Powered By RedHat

Well RedHat is pulling a Microsoft and eol'd it's bread and butter distro in favor of charging people money. They say to use Fedora if you want free software (the point of Linux, right?), but why be a beta tester for the software that you'll have to pay for? Most people I know are jumping ship and heading for a new distro. What about you?

Take our poll!

MyContacts Ready For Download
Written by Tobias on January 27th 2004

Download MyContacts

Needing a contact manager that was accessable anywhere, without all of the extra junk, I opted to write my own, MyContacts. I thought it might be handy for others so I'm releasing it under the GNU General Public License (w00t! open source!)

Check out Clam AntiVirus
Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

Open AntiVirus:

I received a reply this morning from a posting on one of Security Focus' mailing lists from Tomasz Papszun, a guy working on Clam AntiVirus.
Clam AntiVirus is an anti-virus toolkit for UNIX. The main purpose of this software is the integration with mail servers (attachment scanning). The package provides a flexible and scalable multi-threaded daemon, a command line scanner, and a tool for automatic updating via Internet. The programs are based on a shared library distributed with the Clam AntiVirus package, which you can use with your own software. The virus database is based on the virus database from OpenAntiVirus, but contains additional signatures (including signatures for popular polymorphic viruses, too) and is KEPT UP TO DATE.

This is one of the best projects I've seen in a while, so check 'em out by visiting their page, http://clamav.sourceforge.net.

New Tech Article
Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

I went wireless! And I have a new article in the Technical section that tells all. It is an How-To called Wireless Linux Networking made easy. It'll have your wireless device up in minutes.

See it HERE.

And the other article is on how to authenticate OSX against Active Directory without altering your schema, without buying third-party software, or adding a OSX server.

New site is up
Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

Well the new site went up this weekend. I think that I have most of the bugs worked out thus far. I know that the chat and reviews links don't go anywhere yet and I'm working on the download datebase, too. But if you find anything else please let me know so I can fix it.

  • Please post bugs HERE
  • If you'd like to see the old site for some reason, I've archived it HERE
  • Like the new site? Hate it? Let me know. Vote HERE

New site going up
Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

Well the migration to the newsite is going ok. I got alot of the forums imported last night, although most of the posts have dates in May. I've got some of the member's accounts imported, too. If you currently have an account on the old site and can't login to the new site, send me an email and I'll get you fixed up first.

I should have most of the old articles ported over to the site by next week. I've decided to merge Fat of the LAN and Fat of the LAN Tech back into one site. What can I say, I'm lazy.

Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

Powered by Apache
Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

I know it seems strange for someone who's pursuing an MCSE to jump ship from IIS and load Apache webserver, but hey, I'm realistic. I'm tired of loading service pack after service pack just to keep the latest worm or exploit at bay. And I'm really tired of patching files to make them run under IIS when they run under everything else just fine. So, there you go, sorry Bill. This also means that I'll be putting more how to's up soon. It shouldn't take to long to put them together, I should have more time now that I'm not patching IIS ; )

Passed the 70-217!

Server Upgraded
Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

The Fat of the LAN web server was upgraded from a Pentium II 400 with 294 MB's of RAM, to a 2 Gigahertz Celeron with 512 MB's of RAM. The new system rejected my RAID card like a new kidney so it's now handled by the OS. It also got a OS upgrade and all of the latest security patches. Overall, it's a lot quicker.

LAN Party
Written by Tobias on November 1st 2003

In recognician of all the hard work by my student workers this summer, I've decided to host a Lan party for them. It's going to be at my house this Saturday the 13th. We'll start in the afternoon and go untill whenever. I'll gas up the grill so bring anything you want to eat for lunch/dinner. I'll provide boxes for people who'll need them, just let me know in advance. The game will be Counter-Strike unless there is a big demand for something else. I'll need a bigger switch so if anyone coming has a 12+ port switch let me know.
